My Latest Obsession

Alright. So I'll start by saying that I love gaming in all of its forms. Tabletop, console, online, it doesn't matter. I have a lot of favorite franchises and I love them all for different reasons. As a kid it was mainly the fun of playing them. As I've gotten older I've come to appreciate the game design elements inherent to my favorite games. The platforming in Mario's adventures. The subtle interplay of archetypical classes as they are revised time and again in the Final Fantasy line. The new mechanics that come with every new edition or release for Magic the Gathering.

I love it and I'm making my money exploring that love.

Now that that's out of the way I have to admit that I don't game as much as I'd like or as much as I need to. Sure, I buy new games. I plan to play them. But life and work tends to get in the way. Being a producer of content means that you can't always be the consumer of content you want. I get that. And honestly I'm not complaining.

So you can breathe easy. Haha.

This post is just to share my newest obsession with everyone: Warframe. This free-to-play, third person shooter is a great AAA effort from the same studio that gave me what I felt was an unsung game of the last console generation, Dark Sector: Digital Extremes. Don't get me wrong. I said it was "unsung," I didn't say that it didn't deserve to be.

Dark Sector had a lot of flaws but it also had the seeds of some amazing exciting gameplay and sci fi world building. It captured my attention and didn't let go. Imagine my surprise when I found out that the concept was not not only being expanded in a spiritual successor but being expanded upon in a living, vibrant world that fleshed out the lore and gave us even more of the great designs I fell in love with!

Alright, I've danced around it long enough. I bet you're wondering what the game's about.

I won't give away too much. Exploring it for yourself is half the fun. What I will say is that you play the role of one of the Tenno, badass space ninja in super powered armor that defy physics as they wield guns, swords, and all manner of techno-destruction in a galactic war against the corrupt races of the galaxy.

Believe me when I say that it's even more fun in action.

As someone who was tracking the game since its announcement and played in both the alphas and betas, I can say that they haven't disappointed me one step of the way.

In fact, the game had such a huge impact on me that I found it heavily influencing one of my own IPs: Second Skins.

I won't go into too much detail here (I'll save that for another day) but I will say that between this game, Neon Genesis Evangelion, XCOM, and Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers I think I may have finally created that over-the-top, bare-knuckle, anything goes game setting I've been wanting to create and flesh out since college.

That's enough from me. Duty calls.

Once again, the game's free-to-play and a lot of fun. You can play it on PC (with keyboard or a controller) and it's seen release on both the Playstation 4 and XBox One consoles in the last couple of years. It's a lot of fun with a great online community.

Give it a go. I promise you won't be disappointed.
